Role Summary


This role combines hands-on mechanical repair with workshop administration. You will spend 70% of your time servicing commercial vehicles and 30% managing workshop documentation and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Productive & Mechanical (70% of Time)

  • Maintain Fleet: Service, maintain, and repair heavy commercial vehicles (HGV/LGV) and trailers.

  • Diagnose Faults: Use diagnostic equipment to find electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical faults.

  • Prepare Inspections: Ensure all vehicles comply with safety standards for statutory annual testing.

  • Routine Servicing: Carry out oil changes, brake replacements, inspections, and component overhauls.

  • Roadside Support: Attend occasional vehicle breakdowns to perform roadside repairs.

  • Mentor apprentices and shadow new starters: Help and assist with workshop training of apprentices and new starters.

  • Quality Checks: Carry out quality checks on vehicles returning to service.


2. Workshop Administration (30% of Time)

  • Jobs cards and maintenance Board: Open job cards, review mechanics write ups for completed tasks, Monitor maintenance board completion, parts used, and repair times into the fleet management software.

  • Track Compliance: Maintain accurate service history files to meet transport regulatory standards.


Skills and Qualifications


Technical Requirements

  • Certified commercial vehicle mechanic (e.g., QQI level 6 HCV mechanic, City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent).

  • Experience working on heavy commercial vehicles, trucks, or trailers.

  • Full driver's license (HGV/LGV license is a major advantage).

Administrative Requirements

  • Strong computer literacy with experience in MS Office (Excel, Outlook).

  • Experience using fleet management or workshop garage software.

  • High attention to detail for record-keeping and compliance auditing.
